Neither Here Nor There:
A Mixed Child’s Cultural Struggle

Between Cultures, Between Selves.

Between Cultures, Between Selves.

Where Do I Belong?

Neither Here Nor There is an experimental animation exploring cultural identity through my journey across three educational worlds: a Chinese public school, an international school, and an American college. By placing performances of my past selves within digitally constructed environments, I explore how shifting cultural expectations reshape my understanding of freedom, identity, and belonging.

My Journey

In a Chinese public school, I was always chasing time. At an international school, I thought time was finally mine, only to find myself still chasing grades and expectations.

At an US college, I finally found the freedom to explore, create, and choose my own path.

Yet I am not defined by any single chapter. I am shaped by every place I've been, every expectation I've carried, and every version of myself I've become.

Three Worlds, Three Selves.

Reconstructing memory through digital spaces and self-performance.

Constructing the In-Between

Where memory becomes a digital world.

I performed as three versions of myself, using movement and expression to embody the emotions and experiences of each educational stage.

01 — Self-Performance

02 — Digital Collage | Photoshop

Using Photoshop, I combined architectural elements, textures, and symbolic imagery to construct three distinct worlds shaped by memory and cultural expectations.

03 — Animation & Compositing | After Effects

Using After Effects, I animated the digital environments and composited my performances into each scene, bringing personal memories to life through motion and visual storytelling.
